Collection Maps Online

The UC Davis Arboretum Collection Maps web application lets you interactively explore our plant collections using your web browser.  It allows you to zoom to any part of our collections, search for plants, display plant images and research, and print custom maps and tables.  Information about plants in our collections can be found by searching by plant name or by location.  The instructions below show you how to quickly get started with each method.

Search by Plant Name

To locate specific plants in the collections with a common name OR a partial or complete scientific name, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the Explore Maps button on the bottom of the page to launch the web application in a new browser window.
  2. Once the application has finished loading, click on Plant Name Search in the upper left corner of the window.
  3. In the Search for box, type the partial or complete scientific or common name of the plants you would like to find and press enter (e.g. Sequoia OR Sequoia sempervirens OR redwood).
  4. Wait for the search to run (may be slow for common plants).
  5. Explore the details of the mapped plants by clicking on the plus sign next to each plant's name in the upper left part of the Results area, and notice how an orange pin on the map gets temporarily larger to show you where the plant is on the map.
  6. Right-click on the plant name in the Results area to Zoom to, Pan to, or Remove the plant from the list.
  7. Click on the Google Images link to see plant photos.

Identify Plants by Location

To identify plants by location, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the Explore Maps button on the bottom of the page to launch the web application in a new browser window.
  2. Once the application has finished loading, click on the Zoom In tool (magnifying glass icon with a plus sign) in the upper right corner of the window.
  3. Click and drag a rectangle around a portion of the map you would like to zoom into to identify the plants.
  4. Wait for the map to zoom in, and repeat Step 3 again to zoom in further if necessary.
  5. Click on the Map Identify tool (white circle with the letter “i” inside), and click on the exact center of a green or tan dot to display the plant name. (If the plant name does not display, try again)
  6. Click on the downward pointing arrow icon next the plant name to see more information about the plant, and to search for plant photos.
